If your 3-4 year old laptop feels slow, should you upgrade the RAM or SSD first? If you're still using an HDD, upgrade to an SSD first, no contest. HDDs are mechanically slow, making booting, opening apps, and loading files painfully sluggish. An SSD can make an old laptop feel dramatically faster, often reducing boot times from minutes to seconds. If you already have an SSD but your laptop slows down with Chrome, VS Code, and multiple apps open, RAM becomes the priority. 8GB is increasingly limiting for multitasking, while upgrading to 16GB can make a noticeable difference. Before buying anything, check your laptop's upgrade compatibility. Some newer laptops have soldered RAM, while older models may support SATA SSDs but not NVMe. My rule: HDD → SSD first. SSD + 8GB RAM → upgrade RAM to 16GB. It's usually the best performance improvement for your money.
