Went to a stand up show last weekend and keep comparing it to a movie night.
Ticket was 600 rupees, about what I'd pay for a film plus popcorn at a multiplex.
Ninety minutes, three comedians, and I laughed more than I have at any film this year. Could be
luck with the lineup though. I can't repeat one punchline to my dad, and I was crying in there.
Crowd was a mix. Students in front, office groups at the back, two women who brought their mothers.
The mothers laughed louder than anyone. One comedian joked about Hyderabad traffic and the hall clapped before the punchline.
Local stuff works because everyone in the room has been stuck on the same road. Only thing I
didn't like was a long joke about a regional accent. A few people in my row went quiet.
The next act moved on to a story about his mother and fixed the mood quickly.
A movie stays in your head for days. A comedy show is gone by breakfast but
you remember how it felt. For the price I'd go again if the lineup has decent reviews.
Movie when I want to switch off, comedy when I want a crowd. Depends on the day really.
