6 years ago my father had chest pain and we ended up at
a small clinic near Tolichowki, 11 at night. The doctor was maybe 60, tired,
with a queue outside. He still let my father talk for 10 minutes straight.
About his sugar, his knees, his son in Dubai who never calls, things
that had nothing to do with the chest. Then he asked one question about
something my father said in minute 3. That's when I knew he was listening.
Turned out it was gas, not his heart. But the way he got there was
by listening, not by rushing. Every other doctor we'd seen was typing while my father
was still in the middle of a sentence. We went to that clinic for years after.
My wife, my kids, my mother in law, everyone. It was an old building, the fan
made noise, the wait was long. Nobody in my family cared. I notice it with people
at work too now. Some people are just waiting for you to stop so they can start.
You can see it. They nod too early, their eyes go somewhere else, they
say yes yes before you finish. And then there's the odd person who says, wait,
go back, what did you mean by that. That person I'll trust with almost anything.
It happens so rarely. I try to do it myself and I'm bad at
it. My wife says I'm already answering before she's done. She's right. I've started
counting to 2 in my head before I reply. Feels stupid, works a bit.
Who's that person for you? The one who listens properly, start to finish. The
doctor retired last year, by the way. We still haven't found anyone like him.
