I bought a small telescope in Riyadh in August. It cost about 600 riyals and I hid the box from my roommate.
The first night I set it up on the balcony and saw a blur and a neighbour's AC unit.
The second weekend a colleague drove us 1 hour out into the desert. I pointed it
at a bright dot. It was Saturn. A tiny one, with rings, sitting there like a sticker.
I said a very bad word out loud. My colleague laughed so hard he had to sit
on the bonnet. I stayed at the eyepiece for 40 minutes. I've been out 3 times since.
Cold sand, a flask of tea, and a phone torch with red paper over it. The sky
out there is so dark my eyes hurt when I turn back and see the car lights.
It's nothing like the orange haze over Mehdipatnam, where you get the moon and maybe 5 stars. I'm going home for
3 weeks in December and the telescope is coming in my hand luggage. My father keeps asking what I'll do with it.
I told him I'd show him Saturn. He said, from the roof? No, the roof won't work.
The street lights are too bright and the neighbour's water tank is in the way. So I
need a dark place within 2 hours of Hyderabad, somewhere safe to park for a few hours.
I'd go with a friend or 2 and we'd bring chai. Nothing fancy, no tour, just a field.
Where would you take a beginner with a cheap telescope and a very excited father? Moon phase matters, I know that much.
I think new moon is around 9 December, but I haven't checked properly. Any
gate, farm or hilltop that someone has really tried would help me a lot.
