Last Tuesday I ran into Kashif outside a juice shop in Olaya. We were in the same class in
school. I hadn't seen him in 11 years. We said hi, swapped numbers, said let's meet, and nobody meant it.
Then on Sunday I went to a hardware shop in Batha, 40 minutes from Olaya, and he was in there.
Buying a drill bit. I was buying the same drill bit. We both laughed for a full
minute. My first thought was, that's a sign. My second thought was, Riyadh is smaller than it looks.
Half the Indians I know here shop at the same 3 places. Of course we bump into each
other. Kashif disagrees. He says it was written. He said it with a straight face, holding a drill bit.
I said, you work in Malaz, I work in Olaya, we both come here for tools. That's not fate. We
had dinner on Thursday, 3 hours of the same stories. Mr Rao's slipper, the cricket ball through the lab window.
He's married with 2 kids now. He showed me a picture of his daughter and she
has his exact ears. We've met 3 times since. He lives 15 minutes away. We'd both
have gone on for years not knowing. So fine, the first meeting was luck. The second
I'd still call luck. The rest was us really calling each other. I still can't decide.
A drill bit and a juice shop don't really feel like destiny to me. Kashif's mother already told
him it was fate. She says that about everything, even the weather. I keep going back and forth.
Some days it's luck. Some days I think there's something to it. Where do you
land, luck or fate? Has anything like this ever happened to you twice in a week?
