I can't eat sweet before noon. Cereal, pancakes, a sheera, doesn't matter, my stomach says no. My mother
says it's because I'm stubborn. My brother says I'm missing out. Maybe. But give me a plate of
dosa with spicy chutney at 7 am and I'm happy until lunch. Anything sweet and I'm hungry again
within an hour, hunting for something salty. Last month I was at a hotel in Pune for a conference.
The breakfast buffet had 4 kinds of pastry and fruit. Nothing savory except boiled eggs, and they were gone by 8.
I had a croissant and a banana. By 10 I was stuck in a session on tax rules with a growling stomach.
The man next to me heard it and offered me a biscuit. It was a sweet biscuit.
I went out to the lobby at the break and asked the staff for anything with salt.
They brought me a plate of plain toast and a packet of salt. I ate all of it.
I know how that sounds. A grown man eating salted toast in a hotel
lobby in front of the receptionist. She looked a bit worried and asked if
I wanted more. I said yes. At home it was always poha or upma or
leftover rice with a pickle. Sweet was only for Sundays. Maybe that's where it
comes from. My cousin grew up on sweet milk and bread and thinks I'm
odd. We argued about it for an hour at a wedding. Neither of us moved.
What do you all pick when there's nothing but sweet on the table?
