I switch without thinking. With my father it's Urdu in English letters, short and polite.
With my mother it's the same but with more emojis, because she sends them first.
With my college friends it's all three in one sentence, and sometimes a word of Telugu
too. If you counted, I'd say 4 languages a day on one phone, and I never planned
it. The funny part is autocorrect. It only knows English, so it fights me on every message.
Last month I sent my mother a short Urdu word for good night. My phone changed it
to Tuesday. She replied, what Tuesday? Are you coming on Tuesday? I said no, it was a mistake.
She said, then why did you send it, and that went on for a while. Jokes
go to Hindi. I don't know why. A joke in English just sounds like a LinkedIn post.
Anger goes to Urdu, and I get properly blunt. Work stuff stays in English, always.
My cousin in Pune says I sound like 3 different people depending on the chat window.
He's not wrong. My cricket group has never seen me polite once. Typing is where
it gets messy. There's no standard spelling for any of it, so everyone invents their own.
My father spells one word 3 different ways in the same chat. I never correct him.
Voice notes are easier. No spelling, no autocorrect, just talking. But my phone storage is full
of them. Which language do you reach for first when something goes wrong? I'm curious now.
