I can't work in a silent room. It sounds dumb but it's true. After
10 minutes my mind wanders. In school I thought everyone needed total quiet, so
I locked myself in the study room. I'd read the same paragraph 4 times.
Then I'd start listening to the fridge hum instead. Marks were
average. I put it down to a weak brain, not the room.
In final year the library was full one afternoon, so I went to a
cafe near Banjara Hills. Loud mixer, people arguing about cricket, a kid crying. I finished
40 pages in 2 hours. I remember looking up and thinking, why is this easy?
The noise was holding my attention. Since then I've tested it. Cafe
noise works. Rain sounds work. A crowded metro works. Lyrics are the problem.
If there are words I follow them, and the page is gone. Old instrumental
stuff works, or a playlist of rain on a tin roof for 3 hours.
My daughter says I look like I'm meditating when I wear earphones, but I'm just
reading invoices. I run a small consultancy, so there are a lot of invoices. The
one place I fail is home. My house is quiet from 10 am to 3 pm.
Everyone's out, and the silence feels loud. I take my laptop to the balcony
instead. The road below has autos and a vegetable seller who shouts the same line
every 20 minutes. He's my alarm clock now. I'd miss him if he stopped coming.
