There's one power strip behind our sofa in Khobar and every charger we own ends up
on it. I bought it in 2021 for 2 phones. Now it has 9 things plugged
in and 3 hanging off the side. Nobody decided this. My younger daughter left her tablet
cable there one night and the rest just followed. It's like a bus stop for wires.
Nothing ever leaves, new ones keep arriving every week. Last Friday my elder daughter couldn't find her
earphone charger. She searched for 20 minutes and blamed her sister. I pulled the whole bunch out.
Found 2 cables none of us could name, one with a round pin. My younger daughter held one up and
said, this is from Dad's old phone. We sold that phone in 2019. We kept the cable anyway. It's in
a drawer now, in a small bag with a label on it. Every 3 months I sort the strip out.
Throw the broken ones, tape a name on the rest, feel like a hero. The tape lasts about 2 weeks. Then
someone borrows a charger and the label goes missing for good. I tried a plastic basket from the supermarket, 15 riyals.
Now the basket is also full of cables. The laptop charger only works if you tilt it
to the left. I stopped asking why a long time ago. Yesterday I counted again. 11 things.
The strip has a tiny red light and it blinks
at me. I'm scared to buy a second strip. That would
just give the cables more room to settle in. Tonight I'll
sort it out again. Same speech, same tape, same mess by
the time Sunday comes round. My younger daughter just walked past
and plugged in her tablet. She didn't even look at it.
