The top cupboard in my Jeddah flat has been closed for 3 years. Nobody was allowed to open
it. Every time I tried, something fell on my head. Last time it was a full box of
tissue. On Friday I had no work and no excuse. I put on gloves and started pulling things out.
First thing out was a cricket bat with no handle. I have no idea why I carried that
from India. Then came 14 phone chargers. 14. I've had 5 phones in 8 years, so the maths doesn't
work. There was a bag of wedding invitation cards from 2019. Half of them were for weddings I missed.
Under that, an electric kettle that stopped working in 2020. I'd kept it in case I fixed it.
I have never fixed anything electric in my life. Last time I tried, the fan stopped for a
week. The best find was an envelope of passport photos from 2015. I looked about 12 kilos lighter.
I sat on the floor and laughed for a while. My roommate came in and asked if
I was okay. I held one up. He looked at it, looked at me, and said, who's
that guy? I haven't felt that kind of insulted in years. Then I kept the photo anyway.
Everything else went into 3 bags, 2 for the bin and 1 for a charity box near Tahlia
Street. The cupboard is empty now. I keep opening it just to see air. It's a strange feeling. My
roommate has already asked if he can put his gym bag in there. I said over my dead body.
I give it 2 weeks before the junk starts coming back. I've already put one charger inside.
