Yesterday I finished every single thing on my to-do list. All 9. First time since about March, I checked. Most days
I carry 3 or 4 things over to the next day, and some of them have been sitting there for weeks.
Call the dentist was on my list for 47 days. Yesterday I called the dentist. I was so proud
I told my wife at dinner like I'd got a promotion. She said that's nice and kept eating. I
don't even know what was different. Same job, same 2 kids, same 40 minute drive to the office in Edison.
Maybe it was that I wrote only 9 things instead of my usual 15. Normal people
would have figured that out years ago. Or maybe it's that I did the worst one first.
Called the dentist at 9:05, before I could talk myself out of it. After that everything else
felt easy. Even the car registration renewal, which I'd been dreading. The weird part was the evening.
7 pm, nothing left to do, and I didn't know what to do with myself. Walked around the house.
Opened the fridge twice. Sat down, got up, almost started tomorrow's list. My wife told me to just sit.
So I sat on the couch and watched cricket highlights for an hour without guilt. Can't remember
the last time I did that. No list in my head, nothing chasing me. Today's list has 7
things on it. I've done 2 so far and it's 3 pm, so let's not get carried
away. Anyone else get way too happy over something this small? Tell me I'm not the only one.
And if you have a trick that keeps the list short, I'll take it. Mine
is apparently just fewer items. Took me about 15 years of lists to work that out.
