It hadn't rained in Hyderabad since March, and May was brutal. Last Thursday at 5 pm the sky
went dark. I was on the terrace with my phone, trying to get a signal for a call.
First drops hit the dry floor, big ones, spaced out. Then the smell came up all at once.
I forgot what I was calling about. I stood there with my mouth slightly open. Our neighbour's
kid ran out in his school uniform and my mother shouted from the kitchen. She was shouting at
me too, by the way. Come down, you'll get a cold, you're not 10. I didn't go down.
I stood there for 6 minutes, and my shirt was soaked through. The smell lasted maybe 15
minutes after the rain stopped, then it was just wet road. I've tried explaining it to a friend
from Dubai. He said it smells like rain. No. It smells like the ground is saying thank you.
That's the closest I can get. He said I'm being dramatic. He's probably right, but he also hasn't
smelled it in 6 years. Since then I check the weather app every day in the first week
of June. My mother brought me tea on the terrace later without saying anything. That was nice of her.
She'd also brought an umbrella for me, and she held it over her own head.
I drank the tea in the rain. It tasted like earth, which sounds bad and wasn't.
The neighbour's kid is still in the lane right now. Nobody has called him in yet.
