There's a small lake on the south side of Riyadh that almost nobody goes to. I found it by accident.
2 years ago my GPS took me down a dirt road after a wrong exit. I nearly turned back twice.
Then the road ended at a fence, a few trees and a flat stretch of water with ducks on it.
No signboard. No chai stall. Just 1 old man on a plastic chair who looked at me like I was late.
I go on Friday mornings now, before the heat, about 6:15. I take a flask and sit on the same rock.
Nobody talks. Sometimes a couple of families come with kids and a speaker, and I just leave early.
I've only brought 2 people. My cousin hated it because there was no signal. I haven't taken him again.
The other one, a friend from work, sat there for an hour and said ok this is nice. That was enough.
Back in Hyderabad I never had a place like this. Hussain Sagar always had a crowd and a loud balloon seller.
You couldn't sit for 10 minutes without somebody asking if you wanted corn. Here the only noise is the ducks.
Last month I went at 5:30 in the evening instead. The light on the water was orange and I stayed 2 hours.
Missed a call from my mother. She asked where I was and I said just walking. Which is not a lie.
There's a new sign at the turn now, small and green, with the lake's name on it. I saw it in March.
On my next visit there were 3 cars parked by the fence. A guy was flying a drone over the water.
So that's probably the end of it. I'll keep going at 6:15 on Fridays while it's still mostly mine.
The old man is still there. He nods now. I'd call that progress.
