Every morning before work I walk to the window and look at the sky. Then I check
the app. Usually in that order. Sometimes I skip the app if the sky looks clear enough to
me. I know it's backwards. The app has satellites and I have a window with a dirty grill.
But a sky I can see with my own eyes feels more real to me than a
percentage on a phone. Tuesday it was bright blue at 8:30. No clouds anywhere. I left the
umbrella by the door. The app said 80 percent rain by noon. I'd seen it and ignored it.
I'd like to say I had a reason. I just didn't believe a phone over a sky. By 12:40 I was
on my scooter near Gachibowli with water running down my neck. The rain came sideways. I pulled under a flyover with
15 other riders, all of us dripping. A man next to me, in a nice shirt, said, did you check the app?
I said no. He said, me neither. We looked at the rain for 25 minutes and didn't talk
anymore. It felt like a small club. No names, no meetings. Just 2 grown men who trust windows
over satellites. My colleague saw me come in soaked and asked if I owned an umbrella. I said yes.
She asked why it wasn't with me. I said it was at home, next to the
app. She said, you should check the app. I said I did check it. I just didn't
listen. Today the sky was grey and the app said 20 percent. I took the umbrella anyway.
Dry all day.
