Every 2 months or so I get the urge and the living room has to change. It's been going on 4 years.
Our flat in Riyadh is not big. The sofa has 3 possible places, the TV has 2, and the table has 4.
My wife says I'm the only man she knows who plays chess with a sofa. My son,
who's 8, just stands in the corner and watches. He's learned to move his toys first. Last
Thursday I moved everything while they were out. By 6 pm I had the sofa facing the window.
My wife came home, walked in without turning the light on and hit her shin on the new table.
She said a word I won't type here. Then she stood there rubbing her leg and said, where's the sofa?
I said, window. She said, I know it's the window, I'm standing next to it. I can't explain it well.
After about 8 weeks the room starts to feel like a waiting room. I walk in and don't see it.
Then I move the sofa 3 feet and suddenly I notice the whole room. It's the same stuff. Same sofa, same
lamp, same ugly rug from the market in Batha. But it feels like I've been given a new place for free.
Nothing costs anything. They help me with the heavy things, with a face. My son carries pillows and my
wife carries opinions. She has a veto. In 4 years she's used it twice, and both times she was right.
I have a plan for next month already. It involves
the bookshelf, which I'm not allowed to touch. So I'll
move the lamp 1 inch. She'll notice. She always does.
