I talk to my dog all day. His name is Bruno, he's 5, and he's some kind of
brown. I tell him what's for dinner and which colleague annoyed me. I ask him what he thinks.
He tilts his head at the word walk and the word biscuit. Everything else I assume he's judging. It's a normal
routine at home. Nobody sees it. That's what keeps it normal. Last Saturday the plumber came to fix the kitchen tap.
My son let him in. I was in the hall telling Bruno about a meeting where my manager said, let's take this
offline, 6 times. I said, 6 times, Bruno. And then I looked up and the plumber was standing there with his wrench.
He said, sir, should I come later? I said no, no, tap is in the kitchen. He fixed it in
20 minutes. I could feel him not looking at me the whole time. Bruno stayed under his feet, tail going.
He loves strangers. He had no shame at all. When the plumber left he patted Bruno and said, good boy, quietly, like
he was agreeing with something. My son said nothing at dinner. Then he asked me if Bruno had given me any advice.
I said Bruno thinks the manager is a fool. My son said that's not an answer from a
dog. Fine. But when I came back from the meeting on Monday, Bruno was waiting at the door.
Sat right next to my chair while I told him how it went. Didn't leave until
I finished. Maybe he just wanted the biscuit. I gave him one anyway. He deserved it.
