At 25 I'd panic if Saturday had no plan. Friends, a movie, biryani somewhere,
anything. An empty weekend felt like I'd lost something. I'd text 6 people till
someone said yes. Staying home looked like what boring people did. I said that
out loud once. To my uncle. He was lying on the sofa with the
newspaper and just said, okay. I'm 38 now, with a son in class 4
and a job that eats my weekdays. Last Saturday there was nothing on the calendar.
Nothing. I almost didn't believe it. I got up at 8, made tea, and
sat on the balcony with my feet on the railing. Watched a neighbour wash
his car for 40 minutes. It was the best part of my week. My
son played with his blocks next to me. Nobody asked me for a single
thing. Around noon my phone buzzed with an invite to a cousin's get together.
I said no. Old me would have said yes and complained in the car.
This me just said sorry, family stuff. There was no family stuff. I didn't feel
bad about it. That's new for me. I think about my uncle on that sofa sometimes.
I wish I'd sat with him instead of laughing. He's 71 now and still does the same thing every
Saturday. Newspaper, sofa, 2 cups of tea. Called him last week and asked what he does on weekends. He said,
same as always. I almost said I understand now. Then I said, nice, uncle. He said, come over. I might.
