Last Thursday around 8 pm a delivery guy was standing at our building gate, staring at his phone.
He looked about 19. I asked, you lost? He said, the map says I'm already inside your building.
I checked the address. Wrong block, wrong building, about 2 blocks away. The map was just confused.
I had nowhere to be, so I said, come on, I'll show you. He looked at me like I'd offered him a kidney.
We walked together past a laundromat and a closed bakery. He told me it was his 4th day on the job.
He'd done 23 deliveries and already missed 2 doors. His boss was calling him every 10 minutes.
I told him I did the same work in college for a month and quit. He laughed and said, I'm also quitting.
He wasn't serious. Probably. I pointed at the right door and he rang the bell with both hands full.
Then he did something I didn't expect. He put the bag down and said thank you, 3 times in a row.
Not a polite thank you. A tired one, the kind you give when something small finally goes right.
I said it's nothing. He said, no sir, my last 2 customers shouted at me. That was all he said.
I felt good walking back. Like I'd found 20 dollars in a coat I hadn't worn since winter.
It cost me 6 minutes. I've walked past plenty of people staring at their phones in the street.
I always assumed somebody else would stop. Usually nobody does. I have no big thought about it.
When I got home my tea had gone cold and I drank it anyway. It tasted better than usual.
Told my brother on the phone. He said, you gave directions, calm down. I'm still smiling about it.
