My father gave me his old watch the day I got my first job.
A Titan, steel strap, scratched glass. He took it off his own wrist at the dining table and put it on mine.
No speech. He said, the time is 5 minutes fast, don't fix it.
He's set it like that since 1998. I said why? He said, so
I'm never late. I said, but you're always early. He just smiled. It's not
worth much. A shop in Abids offered me 800 rupees when I asked
out of curiosity. I said no thanks so fast that the man laughed.
He said, sentimental? I said something like that. The strap has been replaced twice.
I changed the battery last year and the shop owner asked about the scratch. I
told him to leave it. He charged me 60 rupees and handed it back in a
tiny plastic box. I keep it fast too. 5 minutes. Everyone at work knows my
watch is wrong and nobody mentions it. I wear it only on Fridays and special days.
Mostly it sits in a drawer, next to my passport. Last month I wore it
to a wedding and spent the whole evening checking my sleeve. A kid at the
table asked if it was gold. I said no. He lost interest in me immediately.
So that's mine. An 800 rupee watch with a scratch on it, running 5 minutes ahead.
My brother got the car and the bank account details. I got the watch and I'm
happier. He says he's fine with it. He says it every time he sees me wearing it.
What's the best gift you've ever received, even if it cost nothing at all?
