Last Tuesday I called my friend Rubina back home. Just a normal call, I thought. I said hi, how are you.
She stopped me straight away. She said, what happened? I said nothing. She said, Bushra, what happened.
I hadn't told anyone. My father's test results had come that morning and they weren't good.
I was going to tell her later in the call, maybe. Or not at all. I hadn't decided.
We've been friends since class 6 in Hyderabad. 22 years. I've been in New York for 9 of them.
We talk maybe once a month now, sometimes less. Different time zones, her kids, my work.
And still she heard it in 1 word. My husband didn't notice all morning, and he was sitting next to me.
To be fair to him, I'd been hiding it well. Just not from her, apparently.
We talked for 2 hours. It was 1 am for her. She didn't once say she was tired.
I cried, she listened, she asked the right questions, and then she made me laugh about something from school.
By the end I felt like I could handle the next part. Not happy, but steady.
My father is doing a bit better now, by the way. Next tests are in December.
Do you have someone like that? The person who knows from 1 hello?
I think you only get 1 or 2 in a life. The ones who knew you before you learned to hide things.
I've sent her a box of chocolates. She said don't be silly. She's eaten half already, her son told me.
I'm calling her every week now. Not once a month. Every week.
