When I joined this office in Madhapur 5 years ago, my manager was a man from Pune.
Very serious. At 4:30 on my first day, half the floor stood up at once and walked
to the lift. Without a word. He said, where is everyone going? A guy from accounts said,
chai, sir. He said, now? In the middle of the day? Nobody answered. We just left him
sitting there with his laptop open and his mouth half open. He thought it was a break.
It isn't a break, it's the part of the day where the work happens. Downstairs at
the tea stall, a project that was stuck for 2 weeks got sorted in 10 minutes. Someone
from sales mentioned a client complaint. Someone from tech said, oh, I know why that's happening. Fixed
it standing there, with a Parle G in 1 hand and a plastic cup in the other.
The Pune manager held out for about 3 weeks. Then he came down, quietly, and stood at
the back. He didn't say anything for the first 3 days. Just listened and watched people laugh.
By the 4th week he was ordering for the whole group. Strong, less sugar, extra cups. He's now
the one who stands up at 4:25 and says, chai? Outsiders think it's about the tea. It's not
about the tea. Half of us don't even finish it. It's 15 minutes where nobody has a designation.
The intern and the director stand in the same queue. I've worked in 3 places and this is
the only one where I knew everyone's family by name. I put it down to the tea stall, mostly.
Don't tell HR. Does your office have this? Or is it just a
Hyderabad thing, do you think? My friend in Bengaluru says they do it with
coffee but nobody talks to each other. That sounds awful. I'd like to hear
what other cities do. Bring your stories. The Pune manager is leaving next month
for a better job. We're getting him a cake and a very large flask.
