I made a rainy day playlist in 2019. It has 41 songs now and I add 1 or 2 a year.
There's no rule for what goes in. If a song sounds like water on a window, it gets in.
Most of it is slow. Old songs by Rafi, some guitar music, and 2 Coldplay songs my brother laughs at.
It plays only when it's raining outside, even a little. I don't touch it on a dry day.
Last July I tried to cheat. It was a grey afternoon with no rain, so I played it in the car.
It sounded wrong. The songs I love were just songs. Slow, sad, a bit boring.
I switched it off and then it started to rain 10 minutes later. I turned it back on, and it was perfect.
My sister said that's because you're superstitious. I said, it's science. It isn't.
There's 1 song that goes first every time. A slow guitar thing I found on a bus in 2017.
I don't know the name of the singer. I looked it up and it was a cover of another song.
The cover is better. I've never played the original, because I'm sure it's worse.
My brother says that's the worst way to listen to music. He has about 12 playlists and none of them work.
If you want to try one, here's what I'd do. Pick 10 songs you play in the rain already.
Make a new playlist and don't name it anything clever. Mine is called Rain. That's all it says.
Add to it only when the weather's properly bad. After a few months it starts to feel like a place.
What's on yours? I'd like to steal a song or 2 for the next monsoon.
