Packing for the flight home from Jeddah is easy for me, my bag closes on the first try. My roommate stands there watching.
He folds his clothes in squares and pushes them in. His zip never closes unless he sits on it.
I roll everything tight, shirts first, then trousers around them, socks stuffed inside the shoes. It takes 20 minutes.
He says I'm ridiculous. He says no man should spend 20 minutes on a suitcase. I say watch. We
flew the same day last year. I took 1 bag for me and 1 for gifts. His idea was 3
bags. At the airport mine weighed 22.5 kg. His weighed 26 and he had to pay for the extra 3.
I didn't say a word. I just looked at the scale and then looked at him. That was
enough. He paid 90 riyals and went quiet for the rest of the queue. He still isn't over
it. The shirts come out less creased than you'd think. My mother only ironed the collars when I
got home. She asked who showed me. I said nobody, I worked it out over 6 years of flights.
My roommate says it only works for thin shirts. Jeans don't roll, he says. They do,
mostly. I won't pretend it's perfect. Jeans get a crease down the middle that never leaves.
If you have a better way for jeans, tell me. I'm open. I fly again in
December. Please don't say vacuum bags. I tried them once and my bag looked like a
pillow someone sat on. My roommate thinks I'm being polite to him by asking for help.
I'm not, I just want the extra kilos. He's already bought a new suitcase. A bigger one.
I haven't said a word about it yet.
