My uncle, my father's older brother, told me this years ago. I was 6 months into a job search.
I'd been rejected by 3 companies in a week and I was ready to take the first offer that came.
Any offer, any city. A Dammam company had sent a message, salary lower than I wanted, vague role.
I said I'm taking it. He said, don't reply today. Sleep on it. I was furious at him.
I slept on it. Woke up at 6, still angry, but the anger had gone down to about half.
Read the offer again properly. The role was basically data entry and the salary didn't cover the accommodation.
If I'd replied that night I'd have signed by morning. I'd probably have been there 2 years.
3 weeks later I got the offer from Pune, the one I wanted. 2 good years there.
My uncle has never brought it up since. He's that kind of man. I brought it up on his birthday last year.
He said, did I say that? I told him he did and it saved me. He said good and went back to tea.
I've used it maybe 8 times since. A fight with my brother over property, a rude email to a manager.
Each time I just wait a night. It's boring advice. It's also the only advice I've ever followed.
Has anyone given you a line like that? One that you rolled your eyes at and then kept for years?
I'd like to know what other people have in their pockets. Mine is just this one, and I'm saving it.
My father says his version is, never argue on an empty stomach. I've used that one too.
He's right, of course. Everyone is hungry when they're angry, in my experience.
