Something small happened a while back and I still think about it.
I was trying to fix something at home. Nothing serious, the kind of job that takes five minutes if you know how, and I didn't. A neighbour was standing nearby watching. He knows how to do it, I've seen him do the same thing before.
He looked at me, smiled and walked away.
I sorted it out myself in the end. But it stayed with me. How hard is it to say "do you need a hand?" It costs nothing, and I could always say no.
Then later it hit me. I never asked him either. I stood there struggling, he stood there watching, and neither of us said a word. Maybe he was waiting for me to ask, the same way I was waiting for him to offer.
In our neighbourhood people used to help without waiting to be asked. Now it feels like everyone waits for the other person to go first.
A few days later, something changed. He started helping me with small things, without me asking. So I started doing the same for him.
Now we're good friends. We support each other with all sorts of things, and neither of us waits to be asked anymore.
Has anyone else had a neighbour go from someone you just nod at to a real friend? And who do you think should speak up first, the one who needs help or the one who can see it?
