Last December my daughter visited and drove us around Jersey with her playlist on shuffle. She skipped every
song after about 10 seconds. I asked why. She said, I knew by then if I liked it.
At a red light I took the phone and put on an old Kishore Kumar song I love.
It starts with 50 seconds of violins and a guitar before anyone sings a word. She
lasted 20 seconds. Then she reached for the screen and I said, no, wait. She said, nothing
is happening. I said, that's the bit you wait for. By the second verse she'd gone quiet
and by the end she asked what it was called. She typed the name into her notes.
I felt like I'd won a small court case. When I was a kid my father had
one cassette player and 11 tapes. Each tape had one side I loved. You couldn't skip. You
pressed fast forward and guessed, and half the time you landed in the middle of a song.
So you sat through the intros. I know every one of those violin openings by heart.
I'm not saying new songs are bad. My daughter's playlist had at least 3 I liked. On
the flight back to Melbourne she played it again and sent me a message from the plane.
She said the violins made her a little emotional, which I did
not expect from her. I've now made her a list of 6
old songs, with the longest intros first. She will hate 2 of
them. I'm fine with that, because I hated some of my father's too.
