In most couples I know, one person is the saver and the other is the spender.
It's almost never two savers or two spenders. Maybe opposites really do attract.
The saver checks the bank app every few days and feels calm when the balance grows.
The spender thinks money is for living, and a weekend dinner out is not a crime.
Neither one is wrong. That's what makes it hard.
The fights usually aren't about big things. A 1,500 rupee order online. New shoes when the old ones still work.
Small amounts, but they carry a whole history of who gave up what.
Some couples split it down the middle.
Each puts the same amount into a joint account for rent, groceries and bills, and the rest is personal money nobody questions.
Others put everything in one pot and talk before any spend above a fixed amount, like 5,000 rupees.
Both seem to work for some people and fail for others.
It depends less on the system and more on whether both people agreed to it, or one of them just went along.
It often gets harder after kids.
A couple that never fought about money can start once school fees, a maid's salary and a bigger flat all come in.
The saver gets more anxious, and the spender feels judged for every small treat.
For the married people here, which way do you do it? Separate money, one pot, or something in between?
