Went to a new barber on Newark Avenue last week. My old one retired after cutting my hair for
6 years. The new guy asked how I wanted it. I said, just a trim, a little off the
sides. He nodded like he understood. Then he took the clippers and went in like he was mowing a field.
By the time I looked up the sides were gone. He said, much cooler like
this, no? I didn't say anything. I'm not good at that. I nodded back and
said, nice, and paid 25 dollars. I tipped 5 on top, which I still regret.
I walked home touching the sides with my palm. My daughter called on video from
Melbourne and said, new look? I said, don't. She probably sent a screenshot of my
head to her friends, I'm fairly sure. So here's my rating. 6 out of 10.
It's not terrible. On days I use wax it looks intentional. On other days I look like
I lost a bet. Today, for example, was a lost bet day. What I can't decide is whether
to go back. He's friendly, he's fast, and he plays old songs. The whole cut took 12 minutes.
I think I paid 25 dollars for 12 minutes of mowing. Next time I'll bring a photo
and point at it. Or just say the clipper number out loud. My old barber never needed any
of that. He looked at my head once and just knew. What did you give your last
haircut out of 10? Anything under 5, I want the full story. I'm giving this one a week.
If the sides grow back I might stay.
