When the day is awful, there's only 1 thing I put on. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. The old one,
from 2004. I've watched it all the way through about 4 times, and I've seen some episodes maybe
10. It's 20 minutes an episode, no phones in it, no drama. Just a very silly family in Mumbai.
By episode 2, whatever was on my mind has shrunk to about half. I don't know how it
works. Maya, the mother, is the best part. The way she says every word like she's on a stage.
Every line is so pointed and so ridiculous. I laugh at the same jokes every time,
even the ones I know. My husband thinks I'm strange. He says why don't you watch
something new? I tell him new things need effort. The Sarabhais don't need me to do anything.
I just sit there and they do all the work. Last winter I had a
bad month. A relative was ill, and I was stressed about money. I came home
each night, ate something quickly, and put on an old episode. Same ones, same order.
My husband sat with me one evening and started laughing in the first 5 minutes. He's now a
fan. We watch it together on Sundays now. It's become our little thing, like some people do with chai.
What's yours? The show that you go back to when everything is too much? I think
it matters that it's old and you know every line. Surprises are the last thing I
need then. My sister says I should try therapy. I told her I'm already in therapy.
It's called Sarabhai. Tonight is a Monday and I've had a long day. I know exactly what I'm watching.
