I've tried saving money maybe 5 times in my life. Every
attempt lasted about 6 weeks. The plan was always the same. Transfer
whatever's left on the 30th. Nothing was ever left. On the 30th
I'd look at my account and wonder where it went. Biryani, mostly.
Petrol too. And a pair of white shoes I wore twice. I won't say which
shop they came from. In January I set up a monthly auto transfer for 2,000
rupees on the 5th. The bank guy at the branch did it in 10 minutes.
I didn't have to do anything. That's the whole thing. The money moves before
I see it. I can't spend what I never saw. Some months I feel it.
Once I had to borrow 300 from my sister near the 28th. 10 months in
and I've got 20,000 saved. It's not a lot. My mother laughed when I told her.
She said, I used to save 5 rupees a day in a tin. I asked
how much she had. She said, enough for your school books and your first bag.
She didn't say anything else about it. I told her I'd keep going. She nodded and went
back to cutting onions. I won't pretend it changed my life. I still check my balance 3
times a week. But last month my phone screen cracked, and I paid for it without panicking.
First time ever. I said, oh, I have that. Out loud, in the
shop. The repair guy looked at me. Anyone else here done something like this?
Did you stick with it, or did it fade out?
