There's a medical shop across the road from my building. The board has a green cross and a
name. I've read that name from my balcony every morning for 6 years. Sri Sai Medicals. Easy. On
a Sunday last month I looked across and it was just a green blur with a few white lines.
I rubbed my eyes like in a film. Nothing changed. I went inside and put the kettle
on, very calmly. Then I started noticing the other things. I'd been holding my phone further away
for months. I told myself the font was small. My mother kept asking why I was squinting.
I said I wasn't squinting. I was squinting. At work a colleague asked if she should
read the whiteboard out loud for me. I said no, then got up and walked 2
metres closer. She didn't say anything, which was worse. I booked an eye test in Himayatnagar
for Saturday. The optician kept putting lenses in front of me. Better or worse, better or worse.
I said number 2 was clearer. He said that's the same lens. My left eye
had dropped a lot since my last test 2 years ago. The right one was fine.
He asked how long the headaches had been going on. I said what headaches? He just wrote something
down. The new glasses were ready in 3 days. First thing I did was go straight to the balcony.
Sri Sai Medicals. Of course it was. Crisp and green, like they'd
repainted it overnight. I also found out the board has a tiny
phone number on the bottom that I never knew about. And a
spelling mistake. It says MEDICLES. 6 years I've been looking at that.
