The junk drawer in our kitchen has been a problem since March. It doesn't close all the
way. You have to push it with your hip and hold it for 2 seconds. Then it
clicks. I've said next weekend every Saturday for months. My mother has stopped asking. That's how I
know. She just looks at the drawer and then at me. Nothing else needs to be said.
Last Sunday I finally pulled everything out onto the dining table. Took 20 minutes just to empty. 3 Nokia chargers.
A phone I don't own. 9 AA batteries, no idea which are dead. 14 keys. I
tried each one on the door, the cupboard and the scooter. 2 worked. The rest don't
open anything in this house. I'm scared to throw them away. Then I found passport photos
of me at 19. Hair like a lion. A big moustache I forgot I had. My
mother came in, picked one up, and laughed until she had to sit down. She said,
you looked like a villain. I said, I looked like a student. She said, same thing.
She took the photo and put it on the fridge. It's still there. I can't move it.
I got rid of the batteries and the old receipts. Kept the keys. Kept the chargers too.
The drawer closes now, just about. It still needs a small push but no
hip. I've started a new box for the stuff I don't know what to do
with. It's already half full. It's under the bed. I'll deal with it next weekend.
