Last Friday I bought 2 samosas from a stall near Koti. Hot, straight out of
the oil, 10 rupees each. I asked the man for the chutney in a small cup
so I could dip. He gave me a look. He said, sir, you crack the samosa
and pour it in. Nobody dips here. It's a rule. I said I've been a
dipper my whole life. He said then you've been eating it wrong for years. There were
4 other people waiting, and an old man in a white cap backed him up loudly.
He said the chutney should go in while it's hot, so it soaks into the potato properly.
I said the outside goes soft if you do that. He said, so? That's
what the inside is for. I had no comeback. My samosa was getting cold, so
I did it his way, just to end it. It was good, I'll say
that. The potato went sour and spicy together and every bite had something in it.
But the crust was soft by the 3rd bite and I missed
the crunch. I told him so. He said, you'll get used to it.
Then he handed me the second samosa with the chutney already poured. No questions asked.
I ate it standing at the stall with the old man nodding at me.
At home I told my cousin and he took the stall
man's side immediately. We've been arguing since Saturday. He says dippers are
scared of mess. I say pourers don't like crunch. Neither of us
is moving. I'm going back to the same stall next Friday and
I'll ask for a separate cup again. He'll say no again. I'll
take both ways home, 1 each, and compare them in the car.
