Saturday I drove to Sultan Bazar to buy a laptop charger. I expected 40 minutes of circling. Last time
I parked 1.5 km away near the hospital and walked back in the sun with a bag. This time
a white Alto pulled out right in front of the shop. I had my indicator on before he finished reversing.
I slid in on the first try. No reversing 3 times. No man with a whistle telling me to turn
the wheel. I turned off the engine and just sat there for a second. Grinning. By myself, in a car.
The shopkeeper saw me smiling and gave me a better price. I'm not sure that's related but I'll take it.
Charger was 450. He said 400 for a smiling customer. I said I wasn't smiling. He
said I was. Then I called my friend Waseem, who was at his desk, and told
him about the parking. He hung up. I know how it sounds. A spot is a spot.
But on a Saturday in that area, it's rare. I've been circling that lane since I got
my licence. 5 years, and I think I've parked there twice. My cousin works near there and has
a reserved spot. I told him I parked outside the shop and he said, so? He doesn't understand.
People with reserved spots never do. It's like telling a rich man you found 50 rupees. I stayed 40
minutes in the market, longer than needed. I didn't want to give up the spot. When I finally came out
a man in an auto was already waiting behind my car, staring at me. I pulled out slowly, on purpose.
He honked. I waved. Best Saturday I've had in a while. Went back on
Monday for a screen guard, parked 3 streets away and got rained on. Balance restored.
