Tuesday I left my phone on the bedside table. Realised in the car, 15 minutes from
home, already late. Didn't go back. Told myself it's 1 day, people lived without phones for
thousands of years. By 10 am I'd reached for my pocket maybe 40 times. Every time,
nothing, and a small jump in my chest. I kept thinking my wife had called, or
school had called about my daughter, or my mother had fallen. Couldn't even call home. Her
number is on a paper in my wallet now, and the wallet was next to the phone.
So I emailed her. She doesn't check email. She found out at 1 pm from my
phone buzzing next to her. Lunch was strange. Nobody to text, nothing to scroll. I just
ate and looked at the other people eating. Half of them were on their phones. I
felt very superior for about 5 minutes. The afternoon was better. I got more work done
than I have in weeks, which is a bit worrying. No small checks every 5 minutes.
No WhatsApp groups. Just the work and a cup of tea that got cold. Drove
home and the phone had 23 notifications. 21 of them were the family group. 1
was the bank. 1 was my daughter. A voice note that just said Dad, you
forgot your phone, and then giggling. So, does anyone else get that panic? Like a
part of you is missing even though nothing's wrong. I think about trying 1 day
a week without it on purpose. Then I remember that panic and change my mind.
Maybe weekends. Maybe Fridays after Jummah. We'll see if I last. The wallet stays in my pocket now, by the way. Lesson learned.
