Someone in my family was admitted to a hospital in Dilsukhnagar a few weeks ago. Nothing too dramatic,
but it took 4 days. At discharge they gave us a bill with a long list of
tests. We were never shown a report for many of them. I asked at the billing counter.
The girl said it's part of the package, whether it's done or not. I asked again,
more politely, and she said that's their standard way of doing it. I went to the administration
desk next. A man there listened for 2 minutes and repeated the same thing. He wasn't rude.
He just wasn't going to explain anything, and I felt like I was the one making a scene.
We were tired, my mother was waiting in the car, and everyone just wanted to go home. So
I paid. I'm not proud of that, but at that moment it felt like the only way out.
I think a lot of people do the same. When someone you love is sick, you
don't read the bill line by line. You pay, you leave, you tell yourself you'll sort it
out later and then you never do. I've been looking at that bill every night since then.
The tests I never saw reports for still bother me. Maybe it's all legitimate and I just
don't understand how hospital packages work. But if it's not, where does a person take this? Is
there some body that handles hospital billing? Has anyone here got a similar bill sorted out, even partly?
I'd like to hear how it went. I kept every paper from the discharge,
in a plastic folder, in case I find out what to do. Next time I'll
ask for the itemised bill before paying, and I'll take someone along to check it.
