The escalators at the main entrance of Begumpet metro have been dead for almost 3 weeks.
Both the up one and the down one. Only the stairs on the smaller side entrance work.
So everyone walks the long way round to reach the platform, with bags, kids and walking sticks.
I took the metro to work 4 days this week and counted 6 people stopping halfway
to rest. I called the metro complaint number twice. First time they said a technician would come
within a week. Second time the answer was vaguer, something about parts being ordered from outside Hyderabad.
Yesterday evening in peak hour I saw an elderly uncle struggling on the
stairs, holding the rail. A stranger finally took his bag and helped him
up. It shouldn't depend on a stranger. This isn't the first time either.
The same escalator broke down for about 10 days in the summer. Either nobody looks
after it properly or it can't handle the crowd this station gets every day. Begumpet
is a busy station and lots of office people change here, so you feel it fast.
People in the stairs queue were grumbling. At least I know it's not just my impatience.
Now I'm wondering if posting on the metro's social media page works better than the phone line.
A friend of mine got a reply in 2 days that way for some other station problem.
Has anyone here tried that, or found another way to
get through to the right people? Right now we're all just
adjusting our routine around it, and that's how things stay broken.
