There's a private school on the main road in Dilsukhnagar that I pass most afternoons.
Kids get picked up right on a stretch with no speed breaker and no zebra crossing.
The road opens up wide just after the flyover, so vehicles come off it at full speed.
Parents and kids cross between moving traffic because there is nowhere marked to cross.
I've watched this for close to 2 years and seen 3 close calls with my own eyes.
A bike swerved hard around a kid who ran across. An auto braked so suddenly its passenger nearly hit the front seat.
Nobody got hurt as far as I know. It still feels like a matter of time.
Kids also dart out from between parked autos, so you can't even see them coming until the last second.
On my regular route I pass 2 government schools and both have a speed breaker and a painted crossing.
One even has a constable standing there during the evening rush, waving the cars down.
This private school has nothing, not even a board saying that a school is nearby.
I can't work out why some gates get safety measures and others get none.
I also don't know who we're supposed to ask. The traffic police, the roads department or the school itself?
I suspect that confusion is half the reason nothing has changed in 2 years.
If anyone has got a speed breaker or crossing added near a school, who did you approach?
What finally worked? I'd happily join a group of parents if that's the way to do it.
