Around 7 pm the power goes in our part of Attapur and it comes back a little
before 8. This has now happened on every evening since the eleventh, and I have started noting
it on my phone because I did not believe it myself, and my wife thought I was
exaggerating until she saw the screenshots side by side. Monday it went at 7:04 and returned at
7:52. Tuesday it was 7:01 to 7:58. Yesterday it was 6:58 to 7:47. The inverter in our flat
gives up around the forty minute mark, so by the time the lights return we are usually
sitting in the dark with the phones at 20 percent. Nobody has put up a notice, nobody
from the electricity office has messaged, and the helpline number gives the same recorded line about maintenance
work that was announced for another area. I asked in our building WhatsApp group and eleven people
replied within ten minutes, all saying the same thing, so it is not just our floor. On the
Mehdipatnam side, where my cousin lives, the lights stay on through the same hour. He checked with
two friends in Tolichowki as well and they said the same. So it is our stretch of
lanes behind the mosque and the petrol pump that is going dark, and only in the evening,
when everyone is cooking, the kids are trying to study, and half the street is waiting to
charge a phone. The tea shop owner at the corner says the transformer there has been making a
humming noise since the summer and he has already stopped keeping milk in his fridge after 6
pm. The aunty on the ground floor has stopped cooking dinner before 8 pm because she is
scared of the gas flame in the dark, and her grandson now does his homework at the
staircase landing where the corridor light has a battery backup. That is where things stand as of tonight.
