My property tax notice came last week and the amount was clearly higher than last year.
I usually just pay without looking. This time I put both notices side by side on the table.
The only explanation printed on the new one is the words revised assessment. Nothing else at all.
No square feet, no category, no old versus new figure. Just the new number and a due date.
So I called the ward office. They transferred me to a second person, and then a third.
One of them said there was an area wide revaluation this time, so most houses nearby were affected.
That sounds fine in theory. But nobody asked me or showed me the new value before the bill arrived.
It just came, expecting payment, like a school fee that went up in the middle of the year.
I spoke to 2 neighbours after that and their numbers confused me more. One had a jump like mine.
The other said theirs stayed almost the same as last year. They live 2 streets away.
Similar house from outside, similar age. Nobody could work out why one went up and one didn't.
I'm not against paying tax. The city needs it. I just want a line that says what changed.
Right now I can't tell if my number is correct for my house or a rough figure for the whole area.
Has anyone here managed to get an assessment reviewed or corrected? What did you have to do?
How many visits, which papers, how long did it take? I'd like to know before I walk in there.
I'll post what happens if I go. For now the notice is sitting on my fridge under a magnet.
