I was looking at old phone pictures last night, the early brick ones
with tiny screens and antennas. My father had a huge Motorola in the 90s.
It was so heavy that my mother called it his dumbbell. He kept it in
a leather case on his belt and answered it like he was an important man.
I remember being scared to touch it. I was maybe 7 and thought
it might shock me. My first phone was a basic Nokia in Class 11.
The battery lasted nearly a week. It survived being dropped on the road,
down the stairs and once into a drain by my cousin. I washed it,
dried it in the sun for a day, and it still worked. Try that
with a phone today. The only game I cared about was Snake. I
got a really long snake and my teacher confiscated it. Phones then were just
for calling and texting. Now I use mine for banking, maps, photos and work.
A cracked screen today means a repair shop visit and a week without my phone. Back
then you just kept using it with a crack, and it was fine. I know phones
are better now. I still miss one thing, which was a battery that never worried me.
What was your first phone, and do you remember what it cost your family back then?
Mine was a hand me down from my uncle, so mine was free, which I loved.
Does anyone still have theirs? I'm thinking of digging mine out to see if it switches
on. If it does, I'll let you know. If it doesn't, I'll pretend I never asked.
