Last month my Instagram and Facebook both got hacked, and I didn't even notice for a full day.
First I knew was my cousin calling at 11 at night asking if I was in some kind of trouble.
Someone had messaged him from my account asking for ₹15,000 urgently. Hospital story, very emotional, all fake.
By morning they'd also put up stories with edited photos of me. Relatives saw them before I could do anything.
My uncle in Jeddah almost sent the money. He only stopped because the spelling was weird and I never write like that.
I couldn't log in. Password changed, email changed, phone number on the account changed. Everything.
Pretty sure it was an app I'd installed a week before to edit a video for my nephew's birthday.
It asked for so many permissions and I just kept pressing allow, allow, allow, like an idiot.
Same password on Insta, Facebook and 2 shopping apps. No two factor on anything because I thought it was a hassle.
Went to the cyber crime police station next morning. They took the complaint the same day, no issues there.
They told me to report it through the apps' own help pages and screenshot everything, so I did that.
Facebook gave it back in 4 days after a video selfie. Instagram took almost 2 weeks and I was going mad.
Now it's two factor on everything, a different password for every app, and that editing app is gone.
Went through app permissions on my phone and took away access from almost half of them.
Still getting messages from people asking if I'm ok. Very embarrassing week, would not recommend.
If yours got hacked too, which one was quicker for you to get back, Insta or Facebook?
