Amjad Khan seen here with his wife Shehla (or Shaila) Khan and three children: Shadaab, Ahlam and Seemab. This lovely family portrait shows the warmer, gentler side of the man who terrorized film lovers for generations with his role as Gabbar Singh in ‘Sholay‘. Amjad Khan was clearly remembered very differently at home as his wife Shehla called him a devoted dad who loved his kids fiercely.
He often referred to his daughter Ahlam as his ‘little princess‘ and used to be immensely emotional if his kids felt hurt or fell ill.
Amjad and Shehla were married in 1972 and the couple welcomed their first son, Shadaab Khan in 1973, the very year Amjad began working on Sholay. Their daughter Ahlam Khan turned to a career as an actress and theatre artist, whereas their youngest son, Seemab Khan, explored cricket and different hobbies. It is particularly precious to view this family photograph because it captures an immortalized moment in time before Amjad’s tragic death in 1992. Beneath the monumental on-screen presence there was merely a husband blessed with his family.
The myth might have been Gabbar to countless cinephiles but to Shehla, Shadaab, Ahlam and Seemab, he was simply ‘Dad
