Came across a photo of Amjad Khan with his wife and children online, and I've been thinking about it for days. He's sitting with them like any dad on a Sunday. Nothing like the man we all know from Sholay. Growing up in Hyderabad, I only knew him as Gabbar. My uncle used to repeat his dialogues at dinner. We'd all go quiet and then laugh. Seeing him smiling in a family photo feels strange, in a good way. I read that he was a loving father who got emotional when his kids were hurt or sick. I can't check any of it from Jeddah, so take it as something I came across, not a fact. But the photo does look warm. They all look relaxed, the way people look when nobody is trying to impress anyone. It's the kind of picture you'd want on a wall at home, not in a film magazine. What I find sad is that one role followed him around. People saw Gabbar every time he walked in. I've read he struggled to get other big parts for years because of it. Not sure how true that is. But I know how it feels when people only see one side of you. My manager here does that. He thinks I'm the quiet one in the corner. At home I'm the loudest person in the room. Those Sholay dialogues are still everywhere. Kids who never saw the film can say them. My nephew did the Gabbar voice at my sister's place on a video call and everyone cracked up. He's 9 and has never watched the whole film. He only knows the scenes from phone clips. Do you have a favourite Gabbar scene, or a favourite Amjad Khan film besides Sholay?

My grandfather does exactly this. Whenever one of us cousins misbehaves, he does that slow Gabbar voice. He pauses in the middle of a sentence, just like in the film, and everybody waits.

I always thought a man who plays a villain that scary must be a bit scary himself. Reading that he was a soft dad at home changed how I see the Gabbar scenes now. Last week I rewatched some Sholay scenes with my mother and kept picturing him as a dad. My mother laughed and said the best actors are usually the gentlest people. Maybe she's right.

Reminds me exactly of what happened with a similar actor here who played one iconic negative role early in his career and then struggled for years afterward getting cast in anything else, audiences just could not separate the performance from the actual person for the longest time. That particular kind of typecasting curse seems to repeat across generations of Indian cinema regularly.
