I watched Jawan in the theatre on release week. Packed hall, whistles on every entry,
the full circus. Last Sunday I put it on again at home, alone, with a plate
of leftover biryani. The house was empty that afternoon, so nobody asked me to pause
for snacks. Different film. I'm not saying better, just different. I could finally hear the dialogue.
Nayanthara has way more to do than I remembered. In the theatre I think I missed half her
scenes. Between the whistles and people getting up for popcorn, the quiet parts just disappeared for me. Shah
Rukh in the older role still works. That part I liked even more the second time. The younger
one is fun, but the older one is the reason I'd rewatch it. The flashback part drags though.
In the theatre I didn't notice because everyone was still buzzing. At home on
a couch it felt long, especially the prison stretch, and I checked my phone twice.
My speaker is nothing like a theatre system, but you can still tell the music is carrying
scenes. Anirudh's score does a lot of work. Take it away and some scenes would just sit there.
Some of the messaging felt a bit on the nose to me, but I liked
how it's shot. My brother says I'm an easy audience for Shah Rukh and he's
probably right about that. Anyway I'm going to rewatch a couple of his older films
this week. Has anyone else watched it twice? Did the flashbacks drag for you too?
