I watched a film in a hall last Saturday after almost two months of only watching at home, and I had forgotten how different it feels.
We have a big TV, a good sofa and a speaker my brother bought on offer, but nothing in the flat matches the moment the lights go off and the first scene appears.
Somebody coughed, somebody whispered, and then everyone went quiet at the same time.
I also left my phone in my pocket for three hours, which never happens at home. At home I pause for food, check WhatsApp, answer a call, and come back to a film I am no longer following.
The part I liked most was the crowd. When the funny scene came, a man behind me laughed so loudly that the whole row started laughing at him instead of the screen.
Afterwards we stood outside with tea for twenty minutes arguing about the ending, and that argument was half the outing.
Streaming is convenient and I will not give it up. But some films, especially the big loud ones, only make sense in a hall.
What was the last film you saw in a theatre? Did it live up to the trip?
