Put the Barfi soundtrack on during a long drive last week. I hadn't heard the whole thing
in years. Somewhere around the 3rd track I realised I'd slowed down to 50 on a road
meant for 70. A car behind me honked and I didn't even mind. The music had me.
I first saw that film in a theatre, and I remember not wanting to leave my seat
after. Lots of the film has no dialogue. The music has to do the talking, and it
does. Pritam wrote the songs, but what I keep coming back to is the quiet parts in between.
A few notes and you know exactly what the scene needs from you. Compare that with a lot of new films,
where the background music sounds like a screensaver. Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, I know that. I was in a different
place in life when I watched it. But last month my cousin, 19 years old, heard a track on a random playlist.
She asked me what film it was from. She'd never seen it, never heard of the story. So it's not only
me, I think. Or she has good taste. Both are possible. Which film score still gets you years later? Doesn't have
to be a famous one. Mine for the drive is now a playlist of 12 songs, and the same 3 keep repeating.
I'll listen to the full thing again on the way
to work tomorrow, with the windows up. Might slow down again
on that road. Sorry in advance to whoever is behind me.
