My brother and I drove to Vizag last month, around 8 hours each way. I took the wheel first.
Somewhere near hour 3 he got bored and put on an old RD Burman playlist as a
joke. He expected me to laugh. I didn't. I just turned the volume up and kept driving.
We played it the whole way there and most of the way back, arguing about which song came next.
My brother is 10 years younger and grew up on a totally different kind of music.
He told me later he thought old film songs were only for our parents. By the
3rd song he was asking who sang it. By the 6th he was singing the chorus wrong.
I corrected him twice, and then he told me to stop talking and drive. I don't want
to be the man who says everything old is better. There's good new music out there too.
But those songs sound warm, like a room full of people playing instruments together. Newer tracks I
like feel tidy and clean. Nothing wrong with that, but they don't stay with me for 8
hours. I paid attention to the words too, for the first time in years. Now there's a
playlist on my phone called Vizag Road, 40 songs, and I play it on the way to work.
My brother has asked me twice to send it to him, and I keep saying later just to
tease him. I want to hunt down a few full soundtracks, not only the songs that play everywhere.
If you have a favorite album from that time, tell me which one to start with.
