Last week I watched a big South film in Hindi at a multiplex. The sound was fine
but the mouths didn't match. Every line was a half second late. After 20 minutes I stopped
noticing, which is its own problem. Years ago I'd have waited months for a dubbed version on TV.
Now it's in my city on day 1. That part I like. I don't want to be
the guy complaining about more choice. But I've started to notice that all the big ones feel alike.
Same size of stunt, same big song. Same sort of hero who is a bit of a god.
The plan seems to be, make it travel everywhere. I wonder what happened to the small local
story. The family drama in 1 city with 1 dialect. Those used to get a proper release.
I can't tell if they still do. I told a cousin who works at a multiplex box office.
He laughed at me. He said people queue for the big shared one. Nobody queues for the small local
one on a Friday. He might be right. The hall was full that night and the whole crowd clapped
together at the end. It's hard to argue with a full hall, and I did enjoy being in it.
I'd like to hear from people who watch these in Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam first. Does it feel
like your films are being stretched to suit everyone? Or does it feel like the rest of the
country is finally paying attention? I can't tell from where I sit, with a Hindi dub in my ears.
