My name is Sara, and I am writing this because I still cannot believe it is my own life.
Mine was an arranged marriage, with a lot of hope and a lot of blessings from both sides.
I am an MBA graduate. My husband is a B.Com graduate who was working abroad before the wedding.
During the marriage talks his father told my family clearly that after the wedding my husband would go back abroad and
build his career there. My parents trusted that and agreed with full respect and good intentions.
Everything changed within 10 days, my mother-in-law started saying that my parents had not given an SUV, and that I had failed their standards.
She brought it up again and again, and every conversation slowly turned into money, status and what my family had or had not given.
Then my parents were insulted too. They are honest, hardworking people who gave me away with love, and hearing them abused
over a car broke something in me.
My MBA did not matter. I was treated as if I was worth nothing because I could not meet a demand that was never fair.
There are 3 sisters-in-law in the house. I hoped for a little kindness from them, and I did not get it.
I felt judged and cornered almost every day, reminded that I had not brought enough and that my parents had not done enough.
My husband had already come back to India on final exit from his job abroad before the marriage, so the secure life abroad they described
to us is not what I see now.
At home it is pressure, taunts and tears.
I am not writing this to spread hatred. I am writing because many women stay silent out of shame or fear of losing the marriage, and I
do not want to do that anymore.
A friend told me to keep every message, call recording, photo and a dated note of what happens, so I have started doing that.
If you have been through something like this, what did you do first, and who helped you most?
