The tax calculation itself is fine now. I use the same software every year and it takes an evening.
What stresses me out is the FATCA form for my Indian accounts. Every year, same knot in my stomach.
My accountant keeps warning me about missing even 1 account, so I'm scared of forgetting something.
I have savings accounts, fixed deposits, mutual fund folios and a tiny demat account I barely use.
Some of these are over 10 years old. I opened one when I was a student in Hyderabad.
So I started a spreadsheet last year, one row per account, with the bank, the folio and a note.
I update it whenever something changes. Before that I was rebuilding everything from memory every March.
That's a terrible plan when one of the accounts is a forgotten demat from 2012.
The real time goes into getting year end statements. Every bank has a different portal.
Some want me to visit the branch on my next trip home, which is no use in March.
I log into 5 or 6 sites, each with its own password rules and its own bad design.
Half of my FATCA time is just this, not the form and not the tax maths.
I wish Indian banks had one clean statement for people living abroad. One page, all accounts.
My accountant tells me every year that if it's reported on time, there's nothing to worry about.
So far it always has been, thanks to the spreadsheet. Still, I feel nervous until it's submitted.
How do you all collect your statements? Is there a trick for the slow banks?
